Can't understand the author? Austen's reputation has rested largely
on her role as a writer of "comedies of manners." In her
stories, she depicted a very stratified, conservative
society, in which the middle class valiantly aspired to the
social level of their slightly-betters, and those on the
thin borderline where upper-middle-class and aristocracy met
worked just as valiantly to preserve the pristine purity of
their position -- in short, to keep the outsiders out.
However, the desire of the middle class to appear
aristocratic forced them to adopt a veneer of social
conservatism -- an attribute which became the hallmark of
"polite society" during the early nineteenth
century. These ideals, although commonly studied, tend to be
difficult for contemporary students to fully grasp. To their
rescue comes this website-- with dozens of essays
from which to read and learn...
